Information and Agreement: Personality Survey

What is this document? This document explains what kind of study we’re doing, what your rights are, and what will be done with your data. You should keep this page for your records. After you read this, please continue.

Nature of the study. You are about to participate in a study that requires also involving another person you know well and who knows you well, such as your partner, good friend or a close relative. You should have been brought to this page by a link received from the other person who involved you in the study. Your part of the study involves answering a set of survey questions first about yourself and then about the other person. The other person will be asked to the same.

The study will take place entirely online, allowing you to participate from your own device at a time that suits you. A number of questions will be displayed on the screen and you must respond accordingly. At the start of the study, there will be some questions regarding general demographics such as age, gender, and language background, as well as questions regarding how you know the person with whom you are completing the survey. Your session should last for up to 25 minutes. You will be given full instructions shortly.

Compensation. This study is voluntary, and there is no compensation for participation.

Risks and benefits. There are no known risks to participation in this study. There are no tangible benefits to you, whereas you will be contributing to psychological knowledge.

Confidentiality and use of data. All the information we collect during the research will be processed in accordance with Data Protection Law. To safeguard your privacy, we will never ask any personal information (like names, emails or dates of birth). Your data will be referred to by a unique and random participant number. The anonymised data collected during this study will be used for research purposes and will be made available on Open Science Framework for future research, as is customary in psychological research.

What are my data protection rights? The University of Edinburgh is a Data Controller for the information you provide. You have the right to access information held about you. Your right of access can be exercised in accordance Data Protection Law. You also have other rights including rights of correction, erasure and objection. For more details, including the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office, please visit www.ico.org.uk. Questions, comments and requests about your personal data can also be sent to the University Data Protection Officer at dpo@ed.ac.uk .

Voluntary participation and right to withdraw. Given the anonymity of the data, you will not be
able to withdraw from the study once you have submitted your responses. However, if you change your mind whilst filling out the survey, you may withdraw at any time by closing the tab or window.
